The British Forces join the playground revolution

19 June 2009

Children from Tower Primary School in Dulman, Germany are the third British Forces School to join the Snug playground revolution.

The Service Children’s Education School joins Toucan School in Belize and St Christopher’s School in Gibraltar to purchase Sutcliffe Play’s playground kit, Snug, after seeing it in action.

Headteacher Sarah Flett comments: “As part of our ongoing school improvement programme and healthy schools initiative we’ve been developing outdoor play provision to enhance our curriculum learning.

“As soon as I saw Snug I knew it was something both our children and teachers would love for use during the curriculum but also to enhance better practice at play times.”

The Snug kit, designed specifically with primary school children in mind, comprises nine large colourful pieces of equipment that children can easily move around to create their own playful landscape.

Snug is the result of a fifteen year process of research and evaluation into the way that children behave, react and play in specific environments by playground artists Snug & Outdoor.

It changes the established patterns of behaviour in the school playground by engaging children’s imaginations and giving them the satisfaction of being able to change their own surroundings. It allows children to develop new ways of playing, encouraging creativity, social interaction and cooperation.

Key Stage 1 teacher, Mrs Deakin at Tower School comments: “The children have had a fantastic time getting to know Snug, the flexibility of the kit means we’ve already been able to use it in the gym, on the fields and in the playground.

“The children have been coming up with lots of different role play ideas and vocabulary to describe what they are doing. It’s been fantastic to stand back and watch what the children create and design with the different pieces of equipment.”
